Give to MSS
mss
Members and friends of the Midwest Sociological Society have the opportunity to make contributions to the Society's special funds --the Harry J. Crockett, Jr. Endowment Fund, and the William Exum Minority Scholarship Fund.

Currently, the MSS is also conducting a special capital campaign to increase the Crockett Fund to $400,000.

CROCKETT FUND

What is the Crockett Fund?
The Harry J. Crockett, Jr. Endowment Fund is a capital fund which is invested, rather than spent. The Crockett Fund ensures MSS’s financial stability, because its capital could be tapped to support operating expenses in the event of an unforeseen financial disaster that severely affected MSS annual revenue. Earnings from the Crockett Fund are also earmarked to support MSS grants and awards.

Why give to the Crockett Fund?
  • To help ensure long-term success and financial stability for MSS.
  • To help support – and eventually expand – MSS grant programs.

EXUM FUND

What is the Exum Fund?
The William Exum Minority Fellowship Fund is a capital fund, invested rather than spent, from which the earnings are earmarked to support the Midwest Sociological Society’s annual commitment to fund a Minority Fellowship administered through the American Sociological Association [ASA].  In recent years, MSS has provided $10,000 annually to ASA to support an MSS Minority Fellow.

Why give to the Exum Fund?
To help support – and eventually expand – MSS‘s support of minority scholars.

MSS CAPITAL CAMPAIGN IN 2009-2010

An open letter to MSS members and friends:

You may have read the announcement pertaining to the Membership Phase of the Midwest Sociological Society’s Capital Campaign on the cover of The Midwest Sociologist.  In the past year, you may have also heard or read about the significant, initial gifts to the capital campaign by the MSS Board and Past Presidents.  Now, we are writing to ask you for your support as a member of the Midwest Sociological Society by contributing to this capital campaign.

You already know that the Midwest Sociological Society is a vibrant organization that provides professional socialization, scholarship and friendship for its members.  We want to assure you that the fiscal wellbeing of the MSS is fine, right now. However, volatility in the financial market concerns us and accentuates the importance of maintaining sufficient assets to cover our operating expenses for two years.  Your support is important to reaching this goal to ensure the continued success and viability of the MSS.

Several members have asked for a guideline on which to base their gift.  In response, we mention that several of our colleagues have decided to contribute $10 for every year that they have been a member.  To date, gifts have ranged from $30 to $5,000.  Of course, only you can decide on the amount and duration of your individual gift, but if you need a general guideline, maybe this will help.  We greatly appreciate whatever amount of support you can provide.

We thank you for everything you have done to support the MSS in the past.  With the continued support and involvement of members like you, we know that the MSS will be able to continue its great tradition for a long time to come.

With best regards,
