The Midwest Sociological Society (MSS) invites current undergraduate and graduate students to compete in the MSS’s Inaugural Student T-shirt Design Contest. The winning design will be featured on the 2018 MSS Annual Meeting t-shirt with the theme “Society and the Public’s Health.”

This t-shirt design including illustrations and text should be consistent with 1) an area of sociology, 2) the annual conference theme, or 3) the American Sociological Association’s Code of Ethics (Professional Competence, Integrity, Professional and Scientific Responsibility, Respect for People’s Rights, Dignity, and Diversity, and Social Responsibility)

Submission will be accepted between November 1, 2017 at 12:00 AM Central Time (CST) and January 2, 2018 at 11:59 PM (CST) See below for contest rules.

ELIGIBILITY: The MSS Inaugural Student T-shirt Design Contest is available to current college students who are at least 18 years of age. Employees and interns of MSS and their immediate family members (children, domestic partner, parents, siblings and spouse) and others living in their household are not eligible and are excluded from the contest. Students do not need to be MSS members to submit designs.

AGREEMENT: All participants must abide by the agreement of the entrant form including official rules and sponsor’s decisions, which are final and binding in all matters related to this
contest. Winning is contingent upon fulfilling all requirements set forth herein. All contest entries become the property of the MSS (the sponsor) and will not be returned. 

SUBMISSION PERIOD: Submission will be accepted between November 1, 2017 at 12:00 AM Central Time (CST) and January 2, 2018 at 11:59 PM (CST) 

CONTEST RULES: The winner must follow all instructions of the MSS and their designated representative. There is a limit of two (2) entries per person.

REQUIREMENTS & DESIGN CRITERIA: 

  • Submissions must relate to at least one of the following: 1) an area of sociology, 2) the annual conference theme, or 3) the American Sociological Association’s Code of Ethics (Professional Competence, Integrity, Professional and Scientific Responsibility, Respect for People’s Rights, Dignity, and Diversity, and Social Responsibility)
  • The winning design will be featured on the FRONT of the t-shirt, and therefore, should be no larger than 12 inches across and 13 inches in height including all illustrations and messaging.
  • Submissions must be a ONE color design (can be any ONE color you choose) and can only be used on ONE of the shirt colors options (blue, maroon, or gray).
  • The design must include the name of the organization (Midwest Sociological Society, or MSS, for example).
  • The design must be entirely the original work of the submitter and must not have been displayed previously.
  • Offensive images or text will not be accepted.
  • Designs should be submitted in a camera ready format (.jpeg, .pdf, .png, etc).
  • Designs should be created in Photoshop, Illustrator, or another program where edits can be easily made. All entries should be emailed to mss4students@gmail.com and include the artist’s full name, department and college/university affiliation, email address, and statement confirming the submitter is at least age 18.
  • If your design is chosen, the MSS Program Committee reserves the right to make minor edits as needed.  

SELECTION OF THE WINNER:  After the closing of the submission period, the MSS t-shirt selection committee will review and select three finalists. The general membership of the MSS will then vote on the three finalists. The design with the most votes will be identified as the winner.

WINNER: MSS will announce the winner of the Student T-shirt Design Contest. The T-shirt Design contest winner will be contacted by email on or before February 15, 2018. If the winner does not respond within ten (10) days of the first contact attempt, they will be disqualified, and an alternative finalist will be selected for the grand prize. All decisions by the judges are FINAL in all matters relating to this contest.

PRIZE: The prize consists of:

  • Your art being featured on the t-shirt that will be available for purchase at the 2018 MSS Annual Conference.  Proceeds will be put towards student initiatives for MSS.
  • Complimentary T-shirt
  • Full student member registration for the 2018 MSS meeting in Minneapolis, MN (valued at $50)
  • Recognition at the annual meeting
